Hi I finished my my apprenticeship about 1 year ago I have partaken in lots of exrt welding training at XLT and PMAE ( PMAE is way way way better then xlt). I also live in perth WA. I also had dreams of moving into underwater welding / commercial diving. The under water center fremantal (www.tucf.com.au) is a commercual diving cause.. I been there to get a cert III in dive (the offshour ticked needed to go 50m deep and get offshour) cost over 20k and takes 12 weeks full time then you are on your on to find a job. was way out of my budget so I changed direction and thanks to PMAE am training up to be a pipe welding (TIG MMA FCAW) 6G 6GR s/s SAF 2205 the lot cheeper and really good money out there in construction jobs

    Hi all,

I am nearly mid way through my AS1796 8F, would i be corrent in saying that the only real benifet to doing this cause is if I want to continue further with my training and become a welding supervisor AS 1796 cet 10. As this is the reason for me inrolling in the cause. Because every where I have worked will make you take weld test no matter what certifications/qulifications you have.

Thank you for your help controal-arc. I managed to pass the cuni test I did how even have two goes as they said my first attempted had a little porosity in the root, as it was only just out of spec they let me have another go as the second go was all good. The other test was a 6″ 6G Kobe root flaw fill/cap that one was ok as I had done that before. The cuni is not to bad to weld but you are on the money that it looks dirty and really muddy when welding it.

Hi Flash thanks for your reply. I also love the Kobe 52Us they run so nice. The reason I had to use the 16tc was due to cost but I dont see why it should of been like that as it was a procdure for a large mining company. I was running a 2mm landing and useing a 3.2mm electroid to set the gap. I ended up getting some Kobes in the end and did put in a good root with them I found 70 amps and pushing the rod rigth into the gaps gave me satifsfactory penatration. I did try a few times with the 16tc and every time kept getting suck back. I realy dont like these rods haha, but do belive and if I want to be a good welder I should be able to use what ever I am given. So I will have to keep trying with them I guess.

I am no inspector but when fabricating skids/frames from ub/uc I have all ways prepped on the inside so the back gouging is on the out Side of the beam and is easy to gouge the compleat length. I also put a mouse hole in the web as to be able to weld the full length and being able to gouge from the out side let you gouge right into the middle section where the mouse hole is and the one spot I would be most likely to have got some inclusions. So I can gouge right back to clean metal and fill it up with ease.
