Part 1
Clause 4.1.2 (K)
What is your interpretation? I am conducting a PQR Butt weld on a material that 160mm thick.
1. Is my WPS qualified for >36mm to unlimited? or
2. or from tested thickness to unlimited? 160mm to unlimited?
What are your thoughts????
My interpretation would be 0.5t to unlimited
Where it only says “no upper limit applies”
But on a second look it is very unclear and I would have to go with option 2 ( 160mm to unlimited )
(k) Thickness limitations for butt welds shall comply with the following:
(i) For material with a thickness of less than 36 mm, Item (o) of Table 4.11(A)
applies.
(ii) For material with a thickness of not less than 36 mm, no upper limit applies.
(I) is not applicable as it not less than 36 mm, so go to (ii). There is some grey area here around interpretation.
Probably a bit late now, but by doing the PQR on 36mm plate, you will be covered for welding of 36mm plate 160+mm plate.
