the biggest cause is inexperienced operators dipping the tungsten into the weld pool and constantly sharpening the electorde
outside of this it could be a few things
1. trying to run too much current through an electrode of a given diameter
2. quality of the tungsten, low quality will chew up quicker
3. grinding angle and method is also a factor
