Hi People , Just registered and finding some good info . One query , I got on line to Lincoln as to why gas shielded flux core wires can't be used on open root butt welds and the reply was not really what I need . Anybody got any ideas ?

welcome to the forum
my understanding is that due to the tubular construction (and the flux not contributing to weld metal) this causes
the transfer mode to be typically globular / spray and this leaves little room for error, ie too much heat and not enough fill as you need a minimum amount of amps to melt the flux and wire, the ratio between the wire and flux is the important thing
this is why most people use GMAW short arc or a modified pulse transfer for the root and switch to FCAW for the fill and cap
I have seen some root runs done with metal core that were very impressive at a trade show in china, but metal core as the name suggests is the contents of the core contribute to the weld
