AS 1210 explained: pressure vessels
AS 1210 is the Australian Standard for pressure vessels: it sets out how a vessel is designed, what it is made of, how it is welded and inspected, and what has to be tested before it is put into service. If a drawing says the vessel is designed to AS 1210, this is the document behind it.
In one line
AS 1210 governs the vessel. It does not qualify your welders or your procedures itself: it calls up another standard to do that.
What AS 1210 covers
AS 1210 is a product standard for pressure equipment of the vessel type: receivers, separators, heat exchangers, storage vessels, reactors and similar. It deals with:
- design, including the calculations for shells, heads, nozzles, openings and reinforcement
- materials permitted for pressure retaining parts, and their design allowable stresses
- the types of welded joint permitted in a pressure boundary, and where each may be used
- fabrication tolerances and workmanship
- the extent of non-destructive examination required
- hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing before service
- marking, name plates and the documentation that goes with the vessel
What it does not do is tell you whether the welder is any good. That question is sent elsewhere, which is the single most useful thing to understand about how pressure equipment standards fit together.
Hazard levels drive how much you have to do
Pressure equipment in Australia is classified by hazard level, and the hazard level scales the design review, the inspection, the examination and the in service requirements that follow. A small low pressure air receiver and a high pressure hydrocarbon vessel are not treated the same way, and the hazard level is the mechanism that makes that difference formal rather than a matter of judgement.
Two practical consequences. The hazard level affects whether design verification by an independent party is required. And it affects the in service inspection regime the owner inherits, long after the fabricator has gone home.
How welding qualification works under AS 1210
Welded joints in a pressure boundary have to be made using qualified welding procedures by qualified welders, and AS 1210 points to the pressure equipment welding qualification standard, AS 3992, for both.
In Australian practice, welder certification under AS 1796 is the credential most often produced for pressure work, because the AS 1796 certificate categories are built around exactly this kind of fabrication: hydrogen controlled electrodes, alloy steel plate and pipe, positional pipe welding. Where a client or a design is international, ISO 9606 welder qualification and ISO 15614 procedure qualification appear instead.
Check the edition your specification names. This page explains what AS 1210 requires and how it sits with the standards around it. It does not reproduce the standard, and clause numbers, the accepted qualification routes and tables move between editions. Work from the edition your contract calls up rather than from a website. If you are not sure which edition or even which standard the specification means, ask AWI before anybody strikes an arc.
Who needs to know AS 1210
- Fabricators making or repairing pressure vessels, and their welding supervisors.
- Design engineers sizing pressure parts, and the independent verifiers reviewing them.
- Welding inspectors and QA staff deciding what examination applies and assembling the manufacturer’s data report.
- Owners and maintenance engineers, because the in service inspection obligations follow from how the vessel was classified and built.

AS 1210 is published by Standards Australia and is not free. It also has supplementary material for advanced design methods, which is a separate purchase and only needed for a minority of vessels.
